Construction Site Managers

Firstly, read BS 1090-1 Clause 6.3 and Annex ZA1 and now read the following sections below

Factory Production Control (FPC)

In short, you will need documented and management approved procedures for the control of quality within production.

If you already have ISO 9001 certification, with a scope that includes structural fabrication and welding, the likelihood is, you will comply with the BS 1090 requirements.

Most of you will be working against a customer supplied specification.

Product Evaluation

In the first instance, this is where you confirm the customer requirements, prior to the commencement of production.

This is often named "contract review" (order processing) and this is key to ensuring the customer confirms the "product type" and "execution class" as a part of the contract.

From this customer provided information, you can then proceed with the product evaluation. With final inspection and approval of the product against the originally agreed specification, a UKCA Mark declaration of performance certificate can be issued by you to the customer.

Personnel

The requirement is to ensure your personnel are technically competent for their respective areas of responsibility.

Ensure welders are formally coded and or apprentice served, with consideration to the welding type undertaken.

Appoint a person responsible for weld planning, production and quality control. Your "responsible welding coordinator" usually referred to as RWC.

Constituent Products

With reference to the product specification and technical drawing, this is with reference to the bill of materials and components required for the job. Ensure that you procure of an approved supplier and that you can verify and validate the product as compliance (supported by documented evidence as necessary).

Non-Conforming Products

In short, you will need documented and management approved procedures for the control of quality within production.

If you already have ISO 9001 certification, with a scope that includes structural fabrication and welding, the likelihood is, you will comply with the BS 1090 requirements.

Equipment

With reference to the production equipment  that supports your scope of operation, ensure it is fit for purpose, maintained and where necessary calibrated.

Test and measurement equipment must be calibrated to a level necessary to achieve the specified tolerances.

Welding plants will require calibration, against a known acceptance Standard.

Design

Most small to medium sized fabrication and welding operations, will work to a customer provided specification. Therefore, design can be excluded from your FPC.

If you have design capability within your scope, then you must be able to demonstrate technical and structural engineering competence; taking responsibility for the product design.

Component Specification

Taking the product specification (the design drawings) and with reference to constituent products, ensure that you have an acceptance criteria for all components.

Goods inwards inspection, in-process inspection and test and final inspection will be required against the component specification, for ensuring and recording compliance.
